Liaoning Province is situated in the southern part of north-east China, bordered by the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea in the south and facing Korea across the Yalu River. With a coastline extending 2,178 kilometres, some 62 per cent of its area consists of mountains and 30 per cent of plains. It has a total area of 145,740 square kilometres and a population of 41.94 million. The provincial capital is Shenyang. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.6.1.
