In 2000, the import and export value of Shanxi Province came to US$1.764 billion, an increase of 37 per cent on 1999.

The total export value was US$1.237 billion, a 47 per cent increase over US$839 million in the previous year. This is equivalent to 6.24 per cent of the total GDP of the province and the province's share of the national total export value was 0.5 per cent (see Table 7.4.2).

The province exported US$691 million worth of primary products, which accounted for 55.86 per cent of its total export value. The export of manufactured products was 44.14 per cent of the total export amount (US$546 million).

Total import value was US$528 million, an increase of 17.75 per cent over 1999. The province imported US$410 million worth of manufactured products, amounting to 77.7 per cent of the total import, while the imports of primary products accounted for a smaller share in the total import of US$118 million (see Table 7.4.3).
