Tianjin municipality is directly under the jurisdiction of central government. In addition, it is one of the 14 coastal cities designated by the State Council to implement open policies to encourage foreign investment. Situated in the eastern part of the North China Plain, west of the Bohai Sea and south of the Yanshan Mountains, Tianjin is 137 kilometres south-east of Beijing and it is Beijing's gateway to the sea. Most of the land is flat and open. Tianjin has a total area of 11,305 square kilometres and a population of 10.01 million. Major economic indicators are shown in Table 7.2.1.
