Problems and recommendations

Following entry into the WTO, China's paint industry will face a new challenge. Domestic producers are small- scale and scattered , the industrial structure is not rational enough, labour productive power is low, and technology is backward. All these are prominent problems in the paint industry, and in the 21st century producers should make special efforts to develop in the following three areas:

  1. Handling the relationship between quantity and quality. The domestic paint industry output has already leapt to third place globally, but there remains a definite disparity in quality with advanced foreign countries . The focal point in the development of paints and coatings should be quality improvement, updating existing products and developing new ones.

  2. Attaching more importance to promoting further environmental protection and developing environmental friendly coatings. People today are more aware and pay greater attention to environmental protection. The pollution of the environment by the paint industry is manifested in two ways: one being environmental pollution by production waste products; the other contamination by the volatilization of organic solvents or harmful materials in the application of coatings. So the direction of the development of paints and coatings in the 21st century lies in the production of water-based, powdered, high-curing and radiation-curing coatings.

  3. Laying emphasis on the cultivation of a large number of qualified hi-tech personnel.
