China's absorption of foreign investment experienced a substantial increase in 2001. The actual utilization of foreign investment hit a record high of US$46.878 billion, an increase of 15.14 per cent year-on-year. China has been the largest recipient of foreign investment among developing countries for nine consecutive years . By the end of December 2001, the cumulative number of Foreign-Invested Enterprises (FIEs) was recorded at 390,025, with the cumulative contracted investment and actual utilization being US$745.29 billion and US$395.22 billion respectively.
