Overview

Starlight Industries is a manufacturer and distributor of novelty gifts with locations in six cities in the United States. The company uses several custom-built client server applications to manage its business. In addition, it has two web applications that allow resellers and the general public to purchase goods and manage their accounts through their website.

Physical Locations

The company headquarters is located in Omaha, Nebraska, and contains about 500 employees. The management offices and website are located there.

The company has locations that contain warehousing and sales functions in the following cities (each city has approximately 125 employees):

  • Los Angeles, California

  • Boise, Idaho

  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Client computers currently run a mixture of Windows XP and Windows 98.

Each location contains a domain controller running Windows 2000 Server that acts a file and print server also. The perimeter network in Omaha contains a web server running Windows Server 2003. Omaha also contains a Windows Server 2003 machine that is running SQL Server 2000, which supports the client server applications used to run the business.

The company runs a custom client server application located on a Windows Server 2003 computer at each of its warehouse sites. It provides a command-line administrative interface and a custom-built GUI administrative interface.

Problem Statements

Administrative costs need to be reduced by centralizing all administrative and help desk functions.

Unauthorized users should not be able to perform administrative functions.

All administrative traffic must be secured.

Interviews

Chief Information Officer The costs for maintaining separate administrators and help desk functionality at each site have continued to soar over the years. We must cut costs by centralizing these functions. The business units fear a loss of service, so we need to make this as functional as possible.

Network Administrator We have DSL connections to the Internet from each location and will need to use the Internet for management. This means that the communications will need to be secure and we are concerned about the potential abuse in the system.

Security Policies

All updates to the web servers must be protected from eavesdropping.

All management activities must be protected from eavesdropping.

The website must require a valid user ID and password before allowing a user access to account information.

All customer information sent to and from the website must be encrypted.

Users will need to know if the help desk is watching their computer.

Network administrators must be able to manage the network from any location.
