Summary

This chapter concluded the coverage of web feeds. Specifically, this chapter covered the following:

  • The process of taking content from the web page and putting it into the XML format required by one of the common feed specifications.

  • The topic of caching with a variety of different techniques. Some of the methods likely seemed trivial, but I believe they are worthwhile to examine just to get the mind started on different alternatives.

  • How to create a simple blog, taking the blog data from the database and presenting it to the user.

  • Trackbacks as they are often listed in feeds along with comments, and methods of defeating trackback spam.

  • An example of a feed centering on a fictional gardening store.

The next part of the book focuses on web APIs, the process of web-based applications trading information back and forth.
