In the previous chapter, I covered the Remote Access Server (RAS) API. That API allows an application to create a virtual wide-area network so that an application can continue as if the attached network were local. The Telephony API (TAPI) and the Messaging API (MAPI) can allow some of the same things to happen, but in a much different way.
