Conclusion

Most services need to communicate with the outside world, either as part of their basic operations or for configuration purposes. Some communications protocols present special problems for services, and the CPPService class will be extended to allow multiprotocol communications to take place.

The Service API is one of the features that sets Windows 2000 apart from its siblings in the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. The code presented in this chapter will be the basis of many of the examples in upcoming chapters, especially Chapters 5, 12, and 14.

What enhancements to this code will take place in the following chapters? First and foremost, true event logging will be added. For test purposes, the simple ASCII log in these examples will suffice, but for reliable logging of events that allow access from remote servers as well as support for multiple languages, we'll use the Windows 2000 Event Log service.
