72. Access the SIM Phone Book

Like most mobile phones, your BlackBerry 7100 device includes a subscriber identity module (SIM) card whose primary purpose is to securely store the key that uniquely identifies you to your wireless service provider. In addition to storing your wireless subscriber key, the SIM card in your device also contains storage space for text messages and a phone book. The phone book storage area in your SIM card is known as the SIM Phone Book . This phone book is completely separate from the BlackBerry address book of contacts you normally access using the Address Book application. The SIM Phone Book is more limited than the BlackBerry address book in that it stores only name /number combinations.

You might never find a need to use the SIM Phone Book on your BlackBerry device. On the other hand, if you carried over a SIM card from a previous mobile phone, you might want to access the contacts you stored on the SIM card from your previous phone. Regardless of your motive in using the SIM Phone Book , it's important to know how to access it and interact with the contacts it contains.

1.
Launch the Address Book Application

You might be surprised to find that you access the SIM Phone Book through the standard Address Book application. On the Home screen, scroll to the Address Book icon and click the trackwheel. The Address Book application is launched and displayed on the screen.

2.
View the SIM Phone Book Contacts

Click the trackwheel and select SIM Phone Book from the menu that appears. Click once more to open the SIM Phone Book contacts; these contacts are displayed in the Address Book contact list, temporarily replacing the normal BlackBerry address book contacts.

NOTE

The contacts listed in the SIM Phone Book can be one of two types: abbreviated dialing number (ADN) or service dialing number (SDN). ADN contacts correspond to the contacts you create and enter on your device, including those you might have created on the SIM card using a previous mobile phone. SDN contacts correspond to special service phone numbers installed on your SIM card by your wireless service provider; these numbers might allow you to contact your wireless service provider directly. ADN contacts are shown in the SIM Phone Book in plain text, whereas SDN contacts are shown in bold text.

TIP

To call a contact or send an SMS message to a contact in the SIM Phone Book , click the contact, select Call Contact Name or SMS Contact Name , and click once more.

3.
Copy SIM Contacts to the BlackBerry Address Book

The first thing you should consider doing with the SIM Phone Book is to copy SIM contacts over to the main BlackBerry address book. You have the option of adding individual contacts or copying all of them at once. To copy all the contacts at once, open the SIM Phone Book , click the trackwheel, select Copy All To Address Book from the menu that appears, and click again. All the SIM Phone Book contacts are copied over to the main BlackBerry address book. You are free to edit the contacts in the address book and fill out additional details. (Remember that all that is copied from the SIM Phone Book to the BlackBerry address book is a name and phone number.) To add a single SIM contact to the main BlackBerry address book, scroll to select the contact, click the trackwheel, select Add To Address Book from the menu that appears, and click once more.

4.
Create, Delete, and Edit SIM Contacts

You might decide that it's worthwhile to keep the SIM Phone Book contacts as a backup of important contacts, or in case you move the SIM card to another device and want to carry the contacts with you. Regardless of your motive for managing SIM contacts, the SIM Phone Book allows you to create, edit, and delete contacts. To create a new SIM contact, open the SIM Phone Book , click the trackwheel, select New from the menu that appears, and click again. A dialog box appears that prompts you to enter the name and phone number of the new contact. After entering this information, press the Escape button and then click Save in the confirmation prompt that appears to save the new contact.

Deleting a contact from the SIM Phone Book is as easy as scrolling the trackwheel to select the contact, clicking, selecting Delete from the menu, and clicking again. You are prompted to confirm the deletionjust click Delete to carry out the deletion or Cancel if you change your mind.

Editing a SIM contact involves scrolling the trackwheel to select the contact, clicking, selecting Edit from the menu, and clicking again. You are given an opportunity to edit the contact name and phone number, after which you press the Escape button to exit the Phone Book Entry screen. Click Save in the confirmation prompt to save the changes you made, click Discard to discard the changes, or click Cancel to continue editing the contact.

5.
Exit the SIM Phone Book

Press the Escape button to exit the SIM Phone Book and return to the main BlackBerry address book contact list.
