No teenager's mobile phone is complete without a custom Top 40 ring tone. Although your BlackBerry device is likely used for more than chatting during homeroom, you still might want to personalize your ring tones. If nothing else, BlackBerry profiles offer enough different event notifications that you can experiment with downloaded ring tones just to better differentiate between events.

To install a new ring tone on your device, you must download it from a website. Fortunately, numerous websites offer ring tonessome free and some for a small fee. Whether you download free or purchased ring tones, the process is the same: You follow a link on a web page to download a ring tone to your device and then access the ring tone by editing the profiles for your device. Currently, you can't download a ring tone directly from your desktop PC to your device, which is why you must always go through a website from your device's browser to download new ring tones.

Many websites offer ring tones and, unfortunately , some of them want to charge you for the tones. That might be fine for you, but I personally don't put an enormous amount of financial value on the ring tone for my device. I found a few free ring tone sites you might want to consider:

  • Partners in Rhyme http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/midi/

  • 3gWiz http://www.3gwiz.com/

  • Smart Phone Depot http://www.smartphonedepot.com/media/

Keep in mind that your wireless service provider has likely provided some default bookmarks to sites that offer both free and for-pay ring tones, so consider looking through the default bookmarks as well. T-Mobile offers numerous ring tones through its standard Download Fun bookmark.

1.
Open the BlackBerry Web Browser

Scroll to the Browser icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Bookmarks screen appears, showing a list of websites you can visit using the BlackBerry web browser.

TIP

The Convenience key on your device also serves as a shortcut to the Bookmarks screen. The Convenience key is the large key on the top of the keyboard between the Send and End keys.

2.
Navigate to the Ring Tone Web Page

To navigate to the web page containing the ring tones in which you are interested, click the trackwheel and scroll to select Go To from the menu that appears. Click the trackwheel; a dialog box appears and prompts you to enter the URL. Enter the URL of the website, scroll the trackwheel to select the OK button in the dialog box, and click. The browser opens the website, where you'll likely find several ring tones available for download. Scroll around to find a ring tone you like.

TIP

To make entering a URL easier, hold down the Next key for a moment to switch into multitap mode; SureType can make URLs more difficult to enter. To enter a dot (.) in a URL, press the Space key. Forward slashes often appear in URLs, and you can quickly enter one by pressing the Shift key followed by the Space key. Some URLs work without entering the www. prefix. You might want to try entering a URL without the www. to save some typing.

3.
Follow the Link to Play the Ring Tone

If you're following a link directly to a ring tone, the ring tone automatically opens in the browser's audio player and begins playing. Otherwise, you might have to navigate through a list of ring tones, select the tone you want, and click the trackwheel. Next, select Get Link from the menu that appears, and click again. The ring tone downloads and begins playing in the browser's audio player.

4.
Save the Ring Tone

If you like the ring tone and want to keep it for use in a device profile (see 18 Tweak the Profiles ), scroll the trackwheel to select the Menu button in the audio player; the Menu button is the far right button next to the Stop button. Click the Menu button, scroll to select Save from the menu, and click the trackwheel. A dialog box appears that prompts you to enter a name for the ring tone; the default name will suffice in most cases. When you finish entering the ring tone name , click the Save button to finish and save the ring tone.

5.
Change a Device Profile to Use the Ring Tone

To use the ring tone on your device, you set it as the tune for an event notification profile, such as the Phone event notification in the Default device profile. To change a profile, you must first close or hide the browserpress the End key. Then, scroll to the Profiles icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Profiles screen appears, displaying a list of profiles from which to choose. If you want the ring tone you just downloaded to play whenever you have an incoming phone call, edit the Phone notification within the Default profile and set its Tune field to the newly downloaded ring tone.

NOTE

For a more detailed explanation of how to set the Tune field for a profile notification on your device, see 18 Tweak the Profiles .
