The BlackBerry 7100 series of devices was designed with the business user in mind. For this reason, the devices are somewhat limited in the area of handling media objects through email. More specifically , 7100 devices support only a couple email attachment file types by default. You can obviously view text attachments, which is to be expected. You can also open Adobe Acrobat PDF files, Microsoft Word documents, and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets as attachments, all of which is extremely handy. However, support for file types other than these depends entirely on your wireless service provider or corporate email server (in the case of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server). In other words, there is no guarantee that your device will be able to open attachments such as GIF or JPEG images. As an example, BlackBerry 7100t devices used through T-Mobile originally didn't support image attachments at all, but now they do. Be sure to check with your provider or corporate IT department to find out whether your device supports image attachments.

I would've expected native support for viewing image attachments on all 7100 devices, but this is not the case. If your provider or corporate email server doesn't support the viewing of image attachments, you might want to look into third-party email applications that provide support for additional attachment types. For example, Reqwireless EmailViewer (http://www.reqwireless.com/emailviewer.html) and Terratial's BBImageViewer (http://www.terratial.com/products/bbimage/viewer/) both support additional attachment types; the latter application works in conjunction with the standard Messages application. Just to be clear, before you run out and buy a third-party messaging application, be sure to try the Messages application that ships standard on your device. Your wireless provider or corporate BlackBerry solution might offer plenty of flexibility in handling attachments.

Two third-party email applications that provide support for viewing additional types of attachments on your BlackBerry device.

1.
Open the Messages Screen

Scroll to the Messages icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Messages screen appears, displaying a list of email messages that have been sent and received on your device.

2.
Open the Message with the Attachment

Scroll the trackwheel to select a message from the message list and click. (Note that messages with attachments appear in the list with a paperclip icon.) Select Open from the menu that appears and then click to open the selected message.

TIP

An even quicker way to open a message is to simply press the Enter key after selecting the message from the message list on the Messages screen.

3.
Open the Attachments Screen

Aside from the paperclip icon that appears next to the message in the message list, indication that the message has attachments appears near the beginning of the message text as a word inside square brackets, such as [1 Attachment] or [3 Attachments] . To select an attachment for opening, click the trackwheel while viewing the message and then select Open Attachment from the menu that appears. The Attachments screen appears and shows all the attachments for the message.

4.
Select the Attachment

Notice that the list of attachments for an email message includes plus sign icons next to the attachment files, indicating that they can be expanded to show additional information. To expand an attachment, scroll the trackwheel to select the attachment, click the trackwheel, and then select Expand from the menu. Click to expand the attachment.

Most attachments expand to show two items: Table of Contents and Full Content . The Table of Contents can be retrieved to find out more about what is contained within the attachment without downloading the full attachment content. To actually open and view the attachment itself, scroll the trackwheel to select Full Content and then click. Select Retrieve from the menu that appears and click once more.

You might have to wait a few moments while the attachment is downloaded. After it is successfully retrieved, it is opened and displayed on the screen.

5.
View the Attachment

You view an attachment in much the same way as you view other content on your BlackBerry device. For example, Microsoft Word and Acrobat PDF documents are navigated and viewed similarly to email messages. Microsoft Excel spreadsheets are somewhat unique in that there isn't a standard BlackBerry document type that is similar.

Here are a few useful navigational techniques to remember when viewing attachments. These techniques actually apply to all content on your BlackBerry, including email messages, but they are often required to efficiently move around within an attachment, which is typically sized for a screen much larger than your BlackBerry device:

  • Use the trackwheel to scroll up and down in an attachment.

  • Hold down the Alt key while scrolling the trackwheel to move left and right.

  • The E R and C V keys represent the Home and End keys on a traditional keyboard; they take you to the start and end of an attachment, respectively.

  • The U I and M keys are equivalent to Page Up and Page Down , respectively.

  • For Excel spreadsheets, use the T Y, B N, D F , and J K keys to navigate up, down, left, and right, respectively.

TIP

You must have specific server support for images to view images as attachments on your BlackBerry device. If you can view images, there are a few navigational tips that you'll definitely want to know about. First, you can zoom in on an image by pressing the U I key. You can zoom out in a similar fashion by pressing the M key. Optionally, you can hold down the Shift key and scroll the trackwheel to quickly zoom in and out on an image. Each press of the O P key rotates the image 90 ° clockwise.

6.
Close the Attachment and Message

When you're finished viewing an attachment, press the Escape button to close the attachment. Press the Escape button again to exit the Attachments screen. Press the Escape button two more times to close the email message and exit the Messages application back to the Home screen. Alternatively, to bypass all those Escape button presses, press the End key once.
