34 Compose an Email Message

The BlackBerry Web Client isn't just an online repository for mobile email; it's a full-blown online email client. This means you can use it to carry out tasks common to any email client, such as composing email messages and sending them purely through the Web Client interface. What this means is that you actually have two options for sending email using your handheld email account. You can compose messages on your device and send them wirelessly through your device's data connection, or you can compose them through a web browser and the BlackBerry Web Client and send them over the Internet. Both approaches yield the same result of sending a message through your handheld email account.

Composing a message and sending it through the BlackBerry Web Client is straightforward and is the focus of this task. If you want to learn how to compose a message on your device and send it wirelessly, see 34 Compose an Email Message .

1.
Log In to the BlackBerry Web Client Site on Your PC

If you aren't already logged in to the BlackBerry Web Client, navigate to the BlackBerry Web Client site using your desktop web browser. Enter your user ID and password in the appropriate fields, and click the Login button to log in.

2.
Navigate to the Inbox Page

Click the Inbox icon on the left side of the BlackBerry Web Client menu to open the Inbox page, which shows the contents of the Inbox folder that contains your received email messages.

3.
Start Composing a New Email Message

Click the New button on the Inbox page to begin composing a new email message. The New Message page appears.

4.
Select the Message Recipients

The New Message page includes several fields that allow you to specify the message recipients, as well as the subject of the message, the attachments, and the message body itself. Before getting into the subject or body of the message, you need to specify exactly who is receiving the message. To do this, you can enter email addresses directly into the To, Cc , and Bcc fields just as you would in any other email client. If you want to make things easier on yourself, you can select the email recipients from your Address Book. For the Address Book to be useful, you should consider importing contacts from your PIM client, such as Microsoft Outlook. See 26 Import Your Address Book .

NOTE

Importing contacts into the Address Book isn't critical for sending email, but it is a nice convenience. However, if your PIM client doesn't allow you to export contacts in the CSV format, you'll have to settle for entering email recipients manually. (See 68 Create and Manage Contacts .) Keep in mind that you can also create and add contacts to the Address Book in the BlackBerry Web Client independently of any contacts you import. You can then select them as email recipients just as you select contacts you imported.

To select email message recipients from your Address Book, click the To, Cc , or Bcc button. The Select Names page appears and provides access to your list of contacts as well as to each of the three types of recipient fields ( To, Cc , and Bcc ). You can easily navigate to a subset of the Address Book by selecting a letter in the Show drop-down list. Only contacts whose last names begin with that letter are shown. You then click a contact in the contact list to select it and then click the appropriate recipient button ( To, Cc , or Bcc ).

When you're finished selecting message recipients, click the OK button to return to the New Message page and continue composing the message.

5.
Add Attachments to the Message

You can add attachments to a message sent from the BlackBerry Web Client very easily. Just click the Browse button next to the Attachments field and browse to find the attachment. After you've located the file and accepted it, click the Add button to add it to the message as an attachment. For images, you'll see the name of the file along with a picture of the image. For other file types, you'll just see the name of the file. All attachments are shown with a little trash can next to the filename that allows you to delete the attachment if you change your mind about sending it.

After you've added any attachments to the message, you're ready to enter the most important information of all: the message subject and body.

6.
Enter the Message Subject and Body Text

The subject of the message is entered in the Subject field just above the Attachments line. The body text of the message is entered just below the Attachments line in the large edit field. There really aren't any tricks or secrets associated with composing the message textjust type what you want to say!

7.
Send the Message

When you're finished composing the message, you can either send it immediately or save it to continue working on later. To save the message for later, click the Save Draft button. The message will be available for future editing and sending by clicking the Draft icon on the left side of the page and viewing the Draft folder.

To send the message immediately, click the Send button. The message is sent to the specified recipient(s). If you have set your BlackBerry Web Client options to save a copy of each message sent, a copy of the message will be saved in the Sent Items folder. To view this folder, click the Sent Items icon on the left side of the page. To change the Save Sent Items setting, see 25 Configure Web Client Options .
