Most people are familiar with the popular Post-It notes that are widely used in kitchens and on desks the world over. The concept of a Post-It note is simple but incredibly powerful: to provide a way of jotting down a quick piece of information that you don't want to forget. Just about any small piece of information can be written on such a note: a grocery list, a doctor's appointment reminder, a sketch for a process or product, and so on. I've personally used notes for all three of these types of information, and many more. So, what does this have to do with your BlackBerry?

BlackBerry devices include a built-in application called MemoPad that in many ways serves as an electronic Post-It note. MemoPad takes the Post-It idea to another level in that it allows you to assign each note a title and categorize it if you so desire . But the main idea behind the MemoPad application is to simply give you a convenient place on your BlackBerry to enter bite- size pieces of text information.

1.
Open the Applications Screen

Scroll to the Applications icon on the Home screen and click the trackwheel. The Applications screen appears, showing a list of applications you can launch.

2.
Launch the MemoPad Application

Scroll to the MemoPad icon and click the trackwheel. The MemoPad application launches and appears.

3.
Create a New Memo

The main screen in the MemoPad application consists of a list of memos (notes), which is empty if you haven't yet created any memos. To create a new memo, click the trackwheel, select New from the menu that appears, and click again. A screen appears that enables you to enter details about the memo, including the title and memo text. After entering a suitable title that serves to identify the memo, you next focus on the memo text itself.

You can enter any text you want as the memo text. Just keep in mind that memos are composed as raw text with no special formatting. When you're finished entering the memo text, save the memo by clicking the trackwheel, selecting Save from the menu that appears, and then clicking once more. The memo is added to the memo list, where it is easily identified by its title.

TIPS

You can use several typing shortcuts while entering text on your BlackBerry device. For example, to make the most of the SureType feature, enter an entire word letter by letter before attempting to select from the list of corrections. If you must make a correction, press the Next key ( * ) or scroll the trackwheel to highlight the correction, and then click. To capitalize a letter, hold the letter key until the capitalized letter appears. To scroll through all the available characters on a given key, hold the key and scroll the trackwheel. To insert a period at the end of a sentence , press the Space key twice. To turn on NUM LOCK, hold down the Shift key ( # ) and then press the Alt key; to turn off NUM LOCK, press the Alt key by itself. And finally, to switch between SureType and traditional multitap modes, hold down the Next key ( * ).

You might want to categorize your memos so you can filter and more easily sift through them. To categorize a new memo, click the trackwheel and select Categories from the menu that appears. Click once more to open the Select Categories screen, which enables you to select categories that are assigned to the memo.

4.
View, Edit, and Delete Memos

The list of memos on the main MemoPad application screen provides access to all the memos stored on your device. To manage the memos, scroll to select a specific memo, click the trackwheel, and then select commands from the menu that appears. For example, to view a memo, select View from the menu and click the trackwheel. Editing a memo is similar to viewing a memo except that you are allowed to change the title or memo textselect Edit from the menu and click to edit a memo. Finally, to delete a memo, select Delete from the menu and click. You are prompted to confirm the deletion; click Delete to move forward with the deletion or click Cancel if you change your mind.

TIP

If you've taken the time to categories your memos, you can filter the memo list according to categories by clicking the trackwheel and selecting Filter from the menu that appears. Click once more to open the Select Categories screen, from which you can select the category of memos you want to show in the memo list; memos associated with a category you don't select aren't shown in the list. The exception to this rule is if you select a category to which no memos are assigned, which results in all the memos being shown. To restore the full unfiltered list of memos, just unselect the filter category.

5.
Tweak Memo Options

The MemoPad application provides access to an options screen that allows you to set a single memo option and view your memo statistics. To open the MemoPad Options screen, start from the memo list, click the trackwheel, select Options from the menu that appears, and click again.

The MemoPad Options screen includes only one option, Confirm Delete , which is used to specify whether you want to confirm the deletion of memos. Setting this option to No speeds up the process of deleting memos, but it also removes the safeguard that prevents you from accidentally deleting a memo.

The Number of Entries field on the MemoPad Options screen isn't an option but instead provides you with the total number of memos on your device. This piece of information can help you quickly assess how many memos you have lying around.

6.
Exit the Application

Press the Escape button to exit the application. Press the Escape button again to navigate back to the Home screen, or just press the End key once to exit the application and return directly to the Home screen.
