Lesson 13. Using Apple Remote Desktop

Time

This lesson takes about 2 hours to complete.

Goals

Install, configure, and enable Apple Remote Desktop (ARD)

Control and share screens using ARD

Manage computers using ARD

Use reports to manage your computer assets

Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) is a versatile product that goes far beyond its well-known use of offering remote screen control. In addition to being able to control screens, you can observe screens, share screens, lock screens, gather reports, install software, run UNIX commands, and much more, all from your own workstation.

Although ARD is most commonly used in an enterprise environment for remote assistance, asset control, and computer maintenance, it is also a great tool for use in other environments. Educators use ARD in the classroom to lock everyone's screen, to monitor students' progress while working on a problem, and for displaying a solution on everyone's screen. Classrooms using Apple's NetBoot architecture benefit from ARD by simultaneously issuing startup disk selection and reboot commands to every classroom computer.

ARD has even found its way into the home. Parents can monitor a child's activity on another computer in the house, and individuals can assist a family member at a distant location in troubleshooting a computing problem.

ARD has a number of different uses no matter what type of user you are or how many computers you support. In this lesson, you'll learn how to effectively use ARD to assist both yourself and your users.
