Creating Web Site Aliases and Redirects

Web site aliases are often used if you want a Web site to access documents that are on the local server but outside the Web site's folder. Aliases and redirects are easy to set up in Mac OS X Server using Server Admin.

To create Web site aliases and redirects

1.

Follow steps 12 in the "To add a Web site" task earlier in this chapter to navigate to the screen shown in Figure 9.3.

2.

Click the Aliases tab (Figure 9.11).

Figure 9.11. The Aliases tab allows for the entry of both aliases and redirects.

3.

In the Server Aliases field, add any aliases you may have for your Web site by clicking the plus button and entering the appropriate information (Figure 9.12).

These are any other domain names that you have registered that point to the same IP address and that you want to have serve up this Web site.

4.

If an alias is all that is necessary, click the Save button when you've finished making changes.

You may want to also add redirects at this time.

5.

Click the plus button beneath the redirects portion of the Alias tab to add a redirect (Figure 9.11).

6.

From the Type pop-up menu, select one of the following, enter your redirect, and click OK (Figure 9.13):

  • Alias Maps a site link to a location on your file system

  • Alias match Maps a given expression from your site to a location on your file system

  • Redirect Maps a site link to another Web site

  • Redirect match Maps a given expression from your Web site to another Web site

7.

When you've finished making changes, click Save.

Tip

  • Make sure you verify that the aliased folder has at least read privileges to the www user or group.
