Viewing Print Logs

If you're having printing problems on your Mac OS X Server, your main troubleshooting resource is the print logs. Every time a queue is modified or a print job is processed, the information is written to the print logs, which includes accounting information.

To view print logs

1.

Launch the Server Admin tool and authenticate as the administrator if necessary.

2.

Select the Print service, click the Logs tab at the bottom of the window, and view the available log files (Figure 7.56).

The Logs window appears, showing the log for every printer on the server). By default, it shows you the Print Service log (Figure 7.57, which includes general print service information, such as adding/deleting print queues, starting/pausing print queues, starting/stopping the print server, and issuing print service error messages.

3.

From the Show pop-up menu in the Logs window, select the printer whose log you want to view.

The Logs window shows the log file for the selected print queue (Figure 7.58). This log lists details such as username, print job, and number of pages. Held and deleted print jobs are also reported; however, per-queue logs are only kept for AppleTalk queues.

Tips

  • The Server Admin tool is convenient in that you can view log files remotely; however, it lacks some of the log-reading tools available in the Console utility. If you have local access to your server, you can launch the Console utility located in /Applications/Utilities. Note that the location of the print service logs is /Library/Logs/PrintService. If you aren't sure where a log resides, select it in the Logs window, and the physical location of the log on the server will appear just below the name of the print queue (Figure 7.59).

  • When you're viewing logs from the Console utility, use the Filter field to narrow the log file to the specific items you're looking for.
