Gateway Setup Assistant Overview

Mac OS X Server can be used as a virtual private network (VPN) server or a DHCP server, and it can provide Network Address Translation (NAT). While each of these services can be set up separately, Gateway Setup Assistant permits the basic and quick setup of each of these services.

Gateway Setup Assistant is useful when a novice user wishes to quickly provide Internet access through a Mac OS X Server.

To run Gateway Setup Assistant

1.

On your server, open the Gateway Setup Assistant tool by choosing /Applications/_Server/Gateway.

2.

Enter your address information, authenticate, and click Connect (Figure 2.83).

Tip

  • While Gateway Setup Assistant is easy to use, it does not permit a more granular set of options. If you use Gateway Setup Assistant, please familiarize yourself with both NAT and VPN at the very least.

Xgrid Admin Overview

Xgrid is software that permits several Mac OS X computers to use their idle processing power to complete tasks deployed by an Xgrid administrator. Xgrid Admin works in conjunction with the Xgrid service (set up with Server Admin) and Xgrid Agents (Mac OS X 10.4 computers) (Figure 2.89).
