Automating Installations


Setting up a NetBoot server with install images can be a huge time saver for administrators who need to install new software on many computers simultaneously. To save even more time, you can automate install images to facilitate a nearly hands-free approach.

To automate install images:

1.

Choose /Applications/Server/Network Image Utility (Figure 11.23).

The Network Image Utility opens.

2.

Do one of the following:

  • Click the New Install button in the Toolbar to configure a new install image (Figure 11.24).

  • Click the Images button in the Toolbar, choose an existing install image from the list, and then click Edit (Figure 11.25).

3.

Under the Installation Options tab of the Network Image Utility, select the "Enable automated installation" check box (Figure 11.26).

4.

Click the Options button.

A drop-down sheet appears with a variety of Auto-Install Options to choose from (Figure 11.27).

5.

Choose wisely, and then click the OK button.

6.

Do one of the following:

  • If this is a new install image, click the Create button to complete the image creation process.

  • If you're editing an existing image, click the Save button to finalize your changes.

Tip

  • For faster installation of Net Install images, select the Create Block Copy Install Image check box under the Installation Options tab (Figure 11.28).
