Lesson 19. Mail Security
Email is one of the world's most popular methods of communication today. Speed and simplicity are the big reasons for this, but they are also why you must exercise caution when using email and configuring an email service. Although email is a relatively simple system, securing it involves actions taken in numerous areas, each making email slightly more secure in its own way. In this lesson, you'll learn how to reduce the risks associated with the email you send and receive through your email client software, as well as how to reduce risks associated with email transferred through an email server. The bad guys are coming up with new and innovative ways to violate your security every day, so no technology will ever provide a 100 percent complete solution for securing your email. The cheapest and simplest solution for secure email lies between the chair and the keyboard. You've heard these things already, but they're worth stressing again: Never send extremely confidential data via email unless it's encrypted, and never open attachments unless you're expecting them, and they're from a trusted source. Although technology can't provide guaranteed protection for email, numerous tools can reduce your risk. |
