11.14 Exchange and WMI

 < Day Day Up >

WMI is Microsoft's implementation of WBEM, the Web-Based Enterprise Management architecture as defined by DMTF, the Desktop Management Task Force,[5] an industry body devoted to the definition of cross-platform management standards. DMTF also lobbies computer companies to adopt the defined standards. DMTF wants WBEM to be a uniform access method to management information gathered from different types of servers. The management information includes system state, memory use, a list of applications installed and running on the server, and connected clients.

Exchange 2000 supports WMI with a set of providers that you can exploit to manipulate Exchange objects programmatically. Exchange 2003 expands and improves the capabilities of the providers to support even more access. However, the details of the Exchange WMI providers, including how to leverage them through programs and scripts, are beyond the scope of this book. If you are interested, you can investigate the WMI and Exchange provider interface technical information available on Microsoft TechNet at www.microsoft.com/technet or buy one of the many books on the market. My favorite is Alain Lissoir's two-volume set, largely because the books contain so many practical examples (see Appendix A).
