This is an exciting time to be a developer. Significant feats can be accomplished with relatively little effort. Many advances have been made over the years that contribute to the accelerated environment. So, in a sense, you can stand on the shoulders of giants and wave your hands in the air saying, "Hey, look at me." Now, isn't that exciting? Visual Studio.NET is a wonderful tool for creating powerful distributed applications. The upcoming versions will be even more powerful. They will be based on some exciting technologies coming out of Microsoft Research. Table 9.4 lists resources for developers looking for additional opportunities.
Go to the Microsoft Research Web site (research.microsoft.com) and sign up for the newsletter. Stay on top of what technologies are emerging from this group. You may also want to visit the Multi-University Research Laboratory at murl.microsoft.com. This site makes available lectures from major universities like Carnegie-Mellon, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and the University of Washington. This is an incredible source of knowledge that was previously only available to students at those universities. I challenge each and every developer reading this book to go out and find some product or technology that will make your application better. Don't just settle for the traditional way of computing or the standard database-driven application. Find ways to give your users more natural interfaces and more customized computing experiences. Push the envelope, and don't be afraid to break new boundaries in your organization. |
