Sometimes it's helpful to be able to transfer files between machines. If you're collaborating on a project, you and your collaborators might need to exchange files. Because mail spools frequently have file size limits, an FTP server can provide an alternative means to exchange files. If you've built a website on one machine but want to transfer it to your Mac OS X machine because you have a web server running on it, an FTP server can provide a way to do so. With little effort, your Mac OS X machine can run an FTP server to facilitate this activity. In this chapter, we look at the FTP server included in the Mac OS X distribution. Then we look at an alternative, highly configurable FTP server that you could install in place of the default FTP server. Finally, we take a brief look at alternatives that can be used in place of, or in conjunction with, an FTP server.
