Chapter 2. Understanding Mobile IP

Mobile IP was originally approved as a draft standard of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 1996. The original proposal was built on Request For Comments (RFCs) 20022006. Since then, a number of additional RFCs have added enhanced functionality and clarified the original standards. The core Mobile IP protocol, originally defined in RFC 2002, has been updated and is currently defined in RFC 3344. This chapter presents a combined view of the Mobile IP protocol in its current state, rather than examining each individual draft. Discussions of implementation issues not defined in the standard are also included.
