Summary

 < Free Open Study >

The OpenBSD project's OpenSSH program is a highly compatible, robust implementation of the standard IETF SSH protocol. Installing the portable form of OpenSSH suitable for Linux systems is quite straightforward, though many distributions provide a more convenient prepackaged form. Configuring OpenSSH is generally as simple as editing the appropriate file, depending on whether you are attempting to configure the client or server programs. However, it's important to be cautious since it's easy to misconfigure OpenSSH so that it is in an insecure state.

More generally, this chapter illustrated how to install a generic, stand-alone server or daemon program, and hook it into the operating system. By reading this chapter, you've gained insight into how other similar programs are installed, and you've also gained a little real-world experience into how to install and properly configure a fairly complicated program. The next chapter demonstrates a different software installation technique, using Pluggable Authentication Modules as an example.
