FileMaker Server

 <  Day Day Up  >

FileMaker Server 7 is the correct deployment option for most business-critical solutions. Databases hosted by FileMaker Server are always " open ," and can therefore be accessed by guests without concern that the host is unavailable (which is a concern with peer-to-peer sharing). FileMaker Server allows access for up to 250 concurrent FileMaker Pro clients .

FileMaker Server also has a number of built-in tools to aid with database administration. For instance, you can (and should!) schedule regular backups . You can also do things such as disconnect idle guests to free up resources and enable clients to automatically download updates of plug-ins. Data exchanged between FileMaker Server and clients can be encrypted with SSL, making FileMaker Server a secure deployment option as well.

For more information on these and other features of FileMaker Server, see Chapter 25, "FileMaker Server," p. 737 .

The connection between FileMaker Server and FileMaker Pro clients is network intensive , so this deployment option is most appropriate when all the clients are connected to the server via a fast network. Remote client connections are possible, but performance may not be sufficient to meet users' needs and expectations. In cases where remote users need access to your FileMaker data, you need to consider Web publishing, or using a remote access tool such as Citrix/Terminal Services (discussed later in this chapter) as part of your deployment strategy.
