Best Practices

  • Document backup and recovery procedures.

  • Periodically test the restore procedures to verify accuracy and test the backup media to ensure that data can actually be recovered.

  • Isolate failures before attempting a restore or fixing a problem.

  • Allocate the appropriate hardware devices including servers with enough processing power and disk space to accommodate the restored machines' resources.

  • Host the organization's DNS zones and records using primary DNS servers located either at an Internet service provider (ISP) co-location facility or have a redundant DNS server registered for the domain and located at both the physical locations.

  • Ensure that DNS record-changing procedures are documented and available at the remote site or at an offsite data storage location.

  • Ensure that the host records in the DNS tables for the VPN and Terminal servers are set to low Time to Live values so that DNS changes do not take extended periods to propagate across the Internet.

  • Ensure that network connectivity is established and stable between each site.

  • Replicate file data between the two sites as often as possible.

  • Create at least three copies of backup tape media from a site.

  • Store a copy of all disaster recovery documentation at a secure location but also keep copies in other locations.

  • Define hot spare disks for arrays.

  • Use RAID 1 for system and boot partitions.

  • Understand the dependencies of the applications and services to the operating system to choose whether to rebuild or restore from backup.

  • Do not restore the system state if a server has been cleanly installed and is joined to the original domain.

  • Identify and document special restore requirements for each server.

  • Use a specified subfolder for the restore point such as c:\RestoredData\ to reduce the chance of confusion.
