Punch InOut

Punch In/Out

There may be times when you are listening back to a recorded track and hear parts that are not recorded well. Instead of redoing the entire track, the VS-1680 allows you to record over the badly recorded part. This is accomplished using the Punch-In/Out technique. Switching from playback to recording while a song is playing is called "punching in." Switching from recording back to playback while a song is playing is called " punching out." There are two ways you can punch in and out on the VS-1680: the manual punch method and the Auto Punch method.

Manual Punch

There are two ways you can use the manual punch method: You can punch in and out with your hand or you can use a footswitch.

Manual Punch by Hand

Use the Transport Control buttons to manually punch in and out, as shown in Figure 9.4.

Figure 9.4. This timeline gives a visual demonstration of how to use the manual transport buttons when punching in and out

Use the following steps to manually punch in and out:

1.
Press PLAY to begin playback of the song.

2.
When you reach the exact point in the song that you want to re-record, press REC. The VS-1680 goes into record mode and begins recording the new performance.

3.
When you are finished recording, press REC again to punch out.

The Record Button

Each time the REC button is pressed, the recorder alternately punches in and out.

Manual Punch with Footswitch

There may be times when it is too difficult to perform a manual punch while playing an instrument or engineering. In these cases, it would be convenient to use a footswitch (such as the DP-2 or the Boss FS-5U) to do your punch-ins and -outs, as shown in Figure 9.5.

Figure 9.5. This timeline gives a visual demonstration of how to use a footswitch when punching in and out

Connect the optional footswitch to the VS-1680's Foot Switch (per fig) jack, as shown in Figure 9.6.

Figure 9.6. The Foot Switch jack is located on the rear of the VS-1680, on the left side of the digital connections

Set up the VS-1680 to tell the footswitch what functions to perform by doing the following:

1.
Hold SHIFT and press F5 (SYSTEM).

2.
Press F1 (SYSPM).

3.
Press F2 (Prm 2).

4.
Use the cursor buttons to select Foot Sw.

5.
Use the jogwheel to select Record.

Auto Punch

There may be times when you need to punch in and out at precise, pre-programmed locations. This is called Auto Punch. With Auto Punch, you preset the desired punch-in and -out points and then let the VS-1680 automatically do the punching in and out for you. This is very convenient when you are trying to punch in and out while playing an instrument or singing .

There are three ways to set the Auto Punch:

  • Using locators: Place a locator at the point in the song where you want to punch in and place another locator at the point where you want to punch out. While holding down AUTO PUNCH, press the locator corresponding to the punch-in point, then press the locator corresponding to the punch-out point.

  • Using markers: Set two markers like you did for using locators. Set one for the punch-in point and one for the punch-out point. Move to the marker for the punch-in point, hold AUTO PUNCH, and press NEXT. Without releasing AUTO PUNCH, press PREVIOUS.

  • Programming points during song playback: While the song is playing, press and hold AUTO PUNCH. When you reach your desired punch-in location, press TAP. Continue to hold AUTO PUNCH. When the desired punch-out point is reached, press TAP again. Press STOP.

Choose the method that works best for you in your particular situation. You are ready to re-record your performance after the Auto Punch-In and -Out points have been set. The following demonstrates how to use Auto Punch after the punch-in and -out points have been set:

1.
Press the AUTO PUNCH button. The AUTO PUNCH indicator will light.

2.
Locate a point a few seconds or measures before the Auto Punch-In point.

3.
Press REC. The REC button will start to flash.

4.
Press PLAY to begin playback of the song.

5.
When the song reaches the Auto Punch-In point, the VS-1680 will automatically start recording. The REC button will turn solid red during recording.

6.
When the song reaches the Auto Punch-Out point, the VS-1680 will automatically stop recording. The REC button will go back to flashing.

7.
Press the AUTO PUNCH button to disable Auto Punch when you are finished. The AUTO PUNCH indicator will be unlit.
