Punch In/OutThere may be times when you are listening back to a recorded track and hear parts that are not recorded well. Instead of redoing the entire track, the VS-1680 allows you to record over the badly recorded part. This is accomplished using the Punch-In/Out technique. Switching from playback to recording while a song is playing is called "punching in." Switching from recording back to playback while a song is playing is called " punching out." There are two ways you can punch in and out on the VS-1680: the manual punch method and the Auto Punch method. Manual PunchThere are two ways you can use the manual punch method: You can punch in and out with your hand or you can use a footswitch. Manual Punch by HandUse the Transport Control buttons to manually punch in and out, as shown in Figure 9.4. Figure 9.4. This timeline gives a visual demonstration of how to use the manual transport buttons when punching in and out
Use the following steps to manually punch in and out:
Manual Punch with FootswitchThere may be times when it is too difficult to perform a manual punch while playing an instrument or engineering. In these cases, it would be convenient to use a footswitch (such as the DP-2 or the Boss FS-5U) to do your punch-ins and -outs, as shown in Figure 9.5. Figure 9.5. This timeline gives a visual demonstration of how to use a footswitch when punching in and out
Connect the optional footswitch to the VS-1680's Foot Switch (per fig) jack, as shown in Figure 9.6. Figure 9.6. The Foot Switch jack is located on the rear of the VS-1680, on the left side of the digital connections
Set up the VS-1680 to tell the footswitch what functions to perform by doing the following:
Auto PunchThere may be times when you need to punch in and out at precise, pre-programmed locations. This is called Auto Punch. With Auto Punch, you preset the desired punch-in and -out points and then let the VS-1680 automatically do the punching in and out for you. This is very convenient when you are trying to punch in and out while playing an instrument or singing . There are three ways to set the Auto Punch:
Choose the method that works best for you in your particular situation. You are ready to re-record your performance after the Auto Punch-In and -Out points have been set. The following demonstrates how to use Auto Punch after the punch-in and -out points have been set:
