Mixer Modes Redux

 <  Day Day Up  >

In the previous chapter, I introduced the concept of mixer modes. I can't stress enough how important it is to understand the function of each of these mixer modes. In case there is still any confusion, let me give you a few scenarios.

  • To assign physical inputs to recording tracks, use the Input Mixer

  • To listen to tracks being recorded or tracks already recorded, use the Track Mixer

  • To bounce existing tracks to new recording tracks, use the Track Mixer

  • To have send/return effects recorded as part of recording from physical inputs, use the Input Mixer and the Effects Return Mixer

  • To bounce existing tracks to new tracks and to have any send/return effects currently applied to those existing tracks also recorded to the new tracks, use the Track Mixer and the Effects Return Mixer

To toggle between the various mixer modes, press the FADER[EDIT] button. This button should always be lit, and the color of the button determines which mixer mode you are in. Each time you press the button, the mixer mode toggles between:

  • Input Mixer: FADER[EDIT] button is orange.

  • Track Mixer: FADER[EDIT] button is green.

  • Effects Return Mixer: FADER[EDIT] button is red.

Just to reiterate what was mentioned in the previous chapter, the VS-880 has different mixer modes from the rest of the VS-880/890 workstations. On the VS-880, each of the mixer modes is listed toward the top of the recorder section, along with a light next to the mixer mode name . Pressing SHIFT and the SELECT button toggles between them.
