2000: The VS-890

 <  Day Day Up  >

In July 2000, Roland announced its latest eight-track workstation, the VS-890, shown in Figure 1.6. Even though the VS-880EX had only been on the market for about a year, there were new developments in technology that Roland felt would be selling points for this new workstation.

Highlights of the VS-890

Apart from using a black case instead of a grey case, the VS-890 is almost identical in appearance to the VS-880EX. Like the VS-880EX, the VS-890 had a VS8F-2 effect board factory-installed. The VS-890 combined the best features of the VS-880EX desktop workstation with the advanced features found in the VSR-880. The VS-890 had the following improvements over the VS-880EX:

  • 24-bit recording mode

  • Internal 10GB hard drive

  • Hard drive usability: 10 partitions, 1GB per partition

  • Eight simultaneous recording tracks in linear mode

  • Dedicated CD Mastering function

  • Faster CD burning format

  • 24-bit A/D and D/A converters

Software Upgrades

There were various operating system upgrades available for the VS-890, but no major functionality was ever added to the VS-890.
