Using EQ

 <  Day Day Up  >

The VS-1680 allows you to choose between a two-band (High, Low) and a three- band (High, Mid, Low) parametric EQ for each channel in the Track and Input Mixers, as shown in Figure 11.8. You can adjust these parameters in real time while your song is playing. There are different ways to use the onboard EQ. One way is to increase the gain of the frequency to get a desired result. Another way is to decrease the gain. Decreasing the gain is referred to as using "subtractive" EQ. Increasing the EQ gain always adds some noise, hence, the higher the gain, the louder the noise. This is why many engineers prefer to use subtractive EQ whenever possible.

Figure 11.8. The EQ display allows you to choose between a two-or three-band parametric EQ for each channel of the Track and Input Mixers

EQ can be used during the recording, mixing, and mastering stages or your recording process. I have always found that I get the best results when I use EQ sparingly. I use it to help my tracks blend together. With that said, I tend to use EQ the most in the mixing stage, and only if needed.

To adjust a track's EQ, do the following:

1.
Go to the channel edit screen for the track you want to adjust EQ on.

2.
Use the cursor keys to move to the EQ section of the display, or press F2 (Low). If "Low" doesn't appear above F2, press PAGE until it does.

3.
Press ENTER/YES. The EQ curve display appears.

4.
Use the cursor keys to highlight SW and use the jogwheel to turn it to On.

5.
Use the cursor keys to move to the desired EQ parameter. Use the jogwheel to select the desired value.

6.
Press PLAY/DISPLAY to exit.

The settings on the EQ display are as follows :

SW (Equalizer Switch): Turns the EQ on and off.

(Equalizer Selector): Selects how many bands of EQ you would like to use.

  • Two-band EQ: Low and High bands are available for all 26 inputs and/or track channels at once (28 for the VS-1880 and VS-1824).

  • Three-band EQ: Low, Mid, and High bands are available for 16 inputs and/or 16 track channels at once.

Low: This adjusts the gain ( “12db to +12db) and the shelving frequency (40 Hz - 1.5 kHz) of the low-band EQ.

Mid: This adjusts the gain ( “12db to +12db), the center frequency (200 Hz - 8 kHz), and the Q (0.5 - 16) of the mid-band EQ. The mid-band EQ is not available when the two-band EQ is selected.

High: This adjusts the gain ( “12db to +12db) and the shelving frequency (500 Hz - 18 kHz) of the high-band EQ.
