Chapter 11. Advances in Mixing with the VS-1680/1880

In a traditional mixing setting, you will usually have a dedicated multi-track recorder, a mixing console, and an effects rack. The VS-1680 eliminates the need for these separate external components . Everything you need is contained inside the box. It has its own multi-track recorder, mixing console, and effects rack built right in.

Mixing on the VS-1680 has been simplified in comparison to mixing on the VS-880 series. With the addition of the larger LCD screen, you can see most of your mixing tools on one screen. You can mix internally and keep everything "inside the box," eliminating the need for an external mixing board. You can also use the Direct Out function to send half of your tracks directly out of your VS-1680 and into a separate mixing board for external mixing.

Another great benefit of using the internal digital mixer is Automix. Automix allows you to play back predefined fader moves, pan moves, and effects setting changes in real time. Here are a few benefits of mixing with the VS-1680:

  • Keeps everything in the digital domain.

  • Using automation and scenes gives you more control over your mix.

  • No need for an external mixer.

  • You can compare several different mixes with the press of a button.

  • You can save and re-load all your mixer and effects settings for every song.

  • You can recall the levels and effects settings for bounced tracks and remix them.

Unlike the traditional recording setup, the VS-1680 gives you two totally independent digital mixers inside one box, as shown in Figure 11.1. It is key that you understand the position of these two mixers in relation to the recorder section.

Any changes you make to the Input Mixer will affect all signals before they are recorded. Any changes you make to the Track Mixer will affect all audio that has already been recorded.
