TIP 54: Fixing Table Widths

The power of GoLive's table handling means it's typical for Web designers to experiment with several different design options when they're working with tables. One of the pitfalls of this flexibility is that you can end up with some funky math for the widths of your tables and table cells. Specifically, the sum of the table cell widths might not equal the overall width of the table.

GoLive flags the problem by displaying any mathematical errors in red in the Select tab of the Table & Boxes palette. Place your mouse pointer over these red table measurements (220p in Figure 54a) and you'll see the arrow cursor change to a checkmark.

Figure 54a. Click the red table measurements with the checkmark cursor to correct the table math.

Click the red numbers with the checkmark cursor, and GoLive instantly calculates the correct math and fixes your source code so that the table renders more reliably across different browsers and platforms (Figure 54b).

Figure 54b. After fixing the math in this example, the cell width is 244 pixels instead of 220 pixels.
