TIP 168: Customizing Text Conversion Options

When you drag a text story or an image from a Package window, GoLive makes some assumptions about how you want to use the content. Most of the time GoLive will guess correctly, but sometimes you'll want to override the defaults and customize the options for an object in the Package.

Managing Package Preferences

New in GoLive CS2: You can select multiple stories or multiple images and adjust their conversion settings all at the same time. If you want to start from scratch, choose Delete InDesign Package Preferences from the flyout menu of the Package window to reset the conversion options of every item in the Package.

The default behavior for text is to place the story as an XML component based on the Adobe InCopy file format. This is what most users will want because your GoLive Web pages can be updated automatically based on changes to your InDesign layout (see Tip 174).

However, if you want to break the connection between the print and Web layouts, or if you want to edit or stylize the text in GoLive, you can place the story directly as plain text instead of as an XML component. Select the story in the InDesign Layout or Assets tabs of the Package window and use the Insert As menu in the Inspector palette to choose if you want to place the text as editable text, a component, or an image (Figure 168).

Bonus Tip

Select any frame of a threaded text story in the InDesign Layout view of a Package window, and conversion settings chosen in the Inspector apply to the entire story.

To place stories as plain text with no styling attributes, uncheck the Use CSS Styles option in the Inspector. If you prefer to retain the text formatting, make sure Use CSS Styles is enabled and choose Internal or External to control where the CSS styles are defined. Only choose None if you've already created the CSS styles manually.
