TIP 126: Using the CSS Samples

It can be intimidating to get started with a new technology you're not familiar with. Sometimes the best way to learn a new Web-design technique is to dissect somebody else's work. With this in mind, GoLive CS2 includes dozens of prebuilt style sheets to use and learn from. Here's a good way to do that:

1.

Choose File > New, then select Web on the left side, and then select the CSS category in the middle (Figure 126a). In the bottom right corner of the New dialog is a nice preview of how the selected CSS sample will affect a typical Web page. When you find one you like, select it in the list and click OK.

2.

GoLive creates a new untitled .css file based on the sample you selected in the New dialog box (Figure 126b). Now choose File > Save As… to save it into the root folder of the Web site you're working on.

Save Instantly

In the flyout menu of the New dialog there's an option called Save Instantly. When enabled, any new document you create will automatically bring up the Save dialog, alleviating the extra step of having to invoke Save As… from the File menu.

3.

Now you can make your new CSS file the default for your site (see Tip 119) or attach the external CSS file to existing pages in your site (see Tip 124). Now that you've found a style sheet you want to use, you might want to customize it further or learn from the example file. Open the .css file from the Site window and examine the various rules in the CSS Editor window.
