TIP 118: Tracking CSS Usage with In & Out Links

The ability to observe all the CSS definitions in the CSS tab of the Site window is a cool addition, but what makes this a truly awesome feature is that you can actually manage and update the CSS all in one place. For example, select an external CSS file in the CSS tab of the Site window and open the In & Out Links palette from the Window menu. The pages that reference the selected CSS file are listed on the left, and the Class and ID styles that are contained within the selected CSS file are listed on the right (Figure 118a).

For even more detail, select one of the Class or ID styles on the right. On the left side of the In & Out Links palette you'll see where the style is defined and on the right you can see all the files that use the selected style (Figure 118b).

At this point, you might want to replace one class with a different one. The old way of making an update such as this involved editing each page by hand or performing tedious Find and Replace operations. Now with GoLive CS2, you just have to select the page you want to update and use the Pick Whip tool from the In & Out Links palette (Figure 118c). Find the style on the right that you want to replace and redirect the reference to the new style in the CSS tab of the Site window.
