28.6 FRAME RELAY STANDARDS

American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and International Telecommunications Union Telecommunications Sector (ITU-T) are the two major standardization bodies that developed the Frame Relay standards. The Frame Relay Forum, a nonprofit organization established in 1991 with many equipment vendors as members, also contributed significantly to the standardization activities. The important ITU-T standards for frame relay are:

  • Architecture and service description: I.233

  • Datalink layer core aspects: I.922 Annex A

  • Switched virtual circuit management: Q.933

  • Permanent virtual circuit management: Q.933 Annex A

  • Congestion management: I.370
