Chapter 9: How to Find Problem Queries

 < Day Day Up >

Overview

Problem queries are queries taking too long to run or hoarding too many resources, or both. Problem queries are common in ad hoc user SQL environments and sometimes a result of SQL coding by inexperienced applications developers. Many years ago databases contained small amounts of information and thus ad hoc environments were common. MS-Access is a clear example of an ad hoc single-user environment. In general, a multi-user database environment is not as susceptible to ad hoc SQL user queries since larger databases tend to be more tightly controlled and managed. It is common for inexperienced applications developers to submit inappropriately structured queries to the database. Database administrators have a responsibility to ensure that these queries are located and tuned and that the application developers concerned are advised as to how to build efficient queries. This chapter will discuss some of the various tools that can be used to find problem queries.

Let's look at available tools.
