Chapter 4: A Brief History of Data Modeling

 < Day Day Up >

Overview

A brief history of data modeling is important because it will lead us into the introduction to and tuning of SQL code in the next part of this book. With respect to Oracle software it is important to understand the roots and reasons for the existence of both the relational and object data models. SQL was created in the very beginning of the relational data model. Additionally Oracle Database is effectively an object-relational database. An object-relational database attempts to meld aspects of object data modeling into the relational data model. It is fundamental to the tuning of SQL to understand how SQL was devised in order to comprehend how SQL can be tuned in its most simplistic forms.

We will start our short history of data modeling with a look at all types of data models, progressing on to the history of relational databases and the Oracle Database, finally taking a look at the roots of SQL. This will lead us into the next major part of this book, SQL code tuning.
