Chapter 22: Tuning with the Wait Event Interface and STATSPACK

 < Day Day Up >

Overview

Thus far in Part III we have looked at physical and configuration tuning in a number of ways. Firstly, we looked at initial installation and database creation. Secondly, we examined how to create a proper physical structure. Thirdly, we examined ratios, wait events and latches, with some very brief example drilling down into the Oracle Database Wait Event Interface. Finally, in the previous chapter we briefly discussed some of the tools which can be used to aid in physical and configuration tuning, including what each tool can be used for. In this chapter we will dig a little deeper into some very specific performance views containing database object facts and statistics. These details can be utilized to attempt to find what are commonly termed bottlenecks. After we have described a small portion of what are an extremely confusing plethora of performance views we will take the easy route and use Oracle Enterprise Manager to drill down into the Oracle Database Wait Event Interface. As a final step an example report using the performance monitoring and tuning tool called STATSPACK will be examined.
