Some Final Points

 < Day Day Up >

Oracle software is highly complex, fully featured, fully loaded, and an excellent piece of software. There are a very large number of options and different ways of doing things in Oracle Database software. The result is that the right way to do something in Oracle Database can sometimes be a matter of different opinions between different database administrators, designers, and developers. Since Oracle Database is so very large and versatile many aspects of Oracle Database can sometimes be subject to those opinions.

Perhaps one of the most important things to note about tuning Oracle installations is that there is no hard and fast set of rules for tuning. On the other hand, it is sometimes best to plan a set number of steps and follow those guidelines when tuning in order to avoid a random approach to tuning. Guesswork should never be the order of the day. When tuning Oracle installations focus on critical problem areas. How can critical areas be found? Talk to the users. Talk to developers. Talk to everyone. Find out what problems exist before attempting to solve anything.

Numerous elements discussed in this book have been desupported from Oracle software or deprecated or both. Desupported is a term Oracle Corporation uses for an option soon to be removed. Deprecated is a term used to describe something no longer available in Oracle software. Desupported and deprecated elements have been retained in this book for two reasons. Firstly, multiple versions of Oracle Database are installed out in industry at present. Secondly, it is sometimes necessary to include details of older less favored options within Oracle software in order to facilitate explaining differences between old and new facets of the database.
