What This Book Covers

The aim of this book is to teach you, the reader, about the confluence of two technologies: XML and relational databases. How do XML and relational databases combine to form a more powerful tool? If you want specific information about either XML or some particular database (relational, object, or native XML) then once again, you might be reading the wrong book. This book packs a lot of information, about some very complex and detailed topics, into a brief introductory beginners guide. As already stated, this book is purely about the confluence, juncture, or meeting point of two topics: relational databases and XML.

This book does not focus on XML, the XML DOM, XSL, or any other XML application programming technology, unless that technology is directly related to database technology. This book also does not focus on any particular database engine. This book does, however, explore how XML is used with the Oracle and SQL Server relational databases. There is also a small amount of coverage of native XML databases, and even a brief summary of DB2 database XML capabilities.

Chapters covering the basics of topics, such as XML and XSL, are intended as introductory. If further detail on these topics is required then another book in this series might be useful to you (see, for example, Beginning XML by David Hunter et. al., [Wiley, 2004]).

Some database engines allow complete processing of XML documents through a database-embedded, fully capable XML data type structure. XML data types are explored deeply in this book, as they are considered the most critical confluence between XML and a relational database.
