Name resolution is a key component in any network operating system implementation. The capability of any one resource to locate other resources is the centerpiece of a functional network. Consequently, the name-resolution strategy chosen for a particular NOS must be robust and reliable and should conform to industry standards.

Name resolution plays a major part in any electronic mail environment. As mail travels from the sender to the recipient, servers that handle the mail need to be able to resolve the name of the destination. This concept is similar to the way that post offices handle mail that is routed from one destination to the next . Just as the post office relies on ZIP Codes to route the mail between regions , the electronic mail system uses DNS to resolve where the mail server responsible for handling mail for a particular destination is located.

This chapter gives an overview of the main components of the Domain Name System (DNS) and how it works. Particular focus is given to the interaction between DNS and Exchange Server 2003 environments. In addition, troubleshooting advice and best practices are outlined and defined.
