Best Practices

 <  Day Day Up  >

  • Previous versions of the Outlook client are sufficient for most email users, but those who want to get the most out of Exchange Server 2003 should upgrade to Outlook 2003.

  • Quick flags should be used to draw attention to messages that require follow-up or other attention.

  • Key appointments can be flagged with colors to draw attention to appointments in user Calendars.

  • Using the new search capabilities of Outlook 2003 can drastically improve the time it takes for a user to find messages or information within Outlook.

  • The Custom Installation Wizard in the Office 2003 Resource Kit should be downloaded and used to help deploy Outlook configurations and manage Outlook settings either by script or through Group Policy.

  • Instead of establishing a VPN before accessing an Exchange server from a remote Outlook 2003 client, the RPC over HTTP should be enabled to provide SSL-based 128-bit encrypted end-to-end communication from client to server.

  • Calendars can be set up in group schedules to provide a side-by-side view of appointment Calendars for individuals or groups of users.

  • Free/busy times can be configured to be viewable from the Internet, to provide nonconnected users access and views to appointment schedules.

  • Outlook supports standard iCalendar, vCard, and vCalendar formats for the exchange of information across Exchange systems and cross-platforms.

  • Cached mode for the Outlook client can improve performance for remote users across slow, unreliable, or failed client-to-server connections.
