Reducing Management and Maintenance Efforts

 <  Day Day Up  >

As you have seen throughout the chapter, there are numerous utilities available with Exchange Server 2003 for managing, maintaining, and monitoring the messaging system. These utilities can save enormous amounts of time and energy if properly used.

On the other hand, as messaging systems grow in size and complexity, so do the responsibilities of the administrators who work with them on a daily basis.

In any messaging environment, an administrator must consider opportunities for reducing maintenance efforts to maximize effectiveness and efficiency (that is, doing the right jobs or tasks correctly). Besides, management and maintenance that are streamlined or automated can be tied directly to significant cost savings for the company. Equally important, it keeps you one step ahead of the system so that you are proactively managing and maintaining rather than reacting to the problems.

Using Microsoft Operations Manager

Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) is one tool that can be used to streamline and automate many of an administrator's messaging responsibilities. More specifically , the MOM Application Management Pack provides the key features required to manage, maintain, and monitor the Exchange Server 2003 environment.

Key features to consider evaluating include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Alerting when various thresholds are met, such as resource utilization statistics or capacity

  • Performance baselining and continuous monitoring of system resources and protocols (for example, SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4)

  • Trend analysis of usage and performance

  • A full knowledgebase of Exchange-specific solutions tied directly to over 1700 events

  • Reporting on usage, problems, security- related events, and much more
