Installing and Configuring Routing and Remote Access

Unlike with most network services of Windows Server 2003, RRAS cannot be installed or uninstalled through the Add or Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. After you install Windows Server 2003, Routing and Remote Access is automatically installed in a disabled state.

To enable and configure the Routing and Remote Access Service, log on using an account that has local administrator privileges. Then follow these steps:

  1. Choose Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Routing and Remote Access, as shown in Figure 9.4.

  2. For the local computer, right-click the server icon and select Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access, as shown in Figure 9.5.

  3. For a remote computer, right-click the Server Status icon and click Add Server. In the Add Server property page, select the server you want to add. Then right-click the remote server icon and select Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access.

  4. Select the Custom Configuration option and then click Next.

  5. Choose the options you want to configure in the Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Wizard, as shown in Figure 9.6.

  6. After you complete the wizard steps, the remote access router is enabled and configured based on your selections in the wizard. To configure additional features, use the Routing and Remote Access snap-in.
