Chapter 10.  Ignite-UX

Using Ignite-UX it's easy to create bootable recovery archives for all of your Virtual Partitions. From either the Ignite-UX server or client you can initiate the process of creating an image of your Virtual Partition that is stored on the server. In the event of a failure on your Virtual Partition, you can boot your cleint from the image stored on the server and restore your vPar. With vPars you'll have many more images of HP-UX to manage than without vPars. For instance, on an N-Class system running without vPars, you would have only one instance of HP-UX, but with vPars you might have four instances of HP-UX, with two CPUs each to manage. You may have many additional system management-related challenges as a result of the additional images of HP-UX to manage; however, Ignite-UX will make creating the bootable recovery archives easy for you.

In the Virtual Partition-specific part of this chapter we'll focus on creating the bootable recovery archive using the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of Ignite-UX on the server. We'll walk through the process of creating the bootable recovery archives as well as take a look at some of the activities taking place in the background. Then a step-by-step procedure to use IgniteUX and vPars, developed by an HP lab engineer, will be included. In the non-vPars-specific section of this chapter, a lot of background and examples of Ignite-UX will be covered.

Keep in mind that Ignite-UX to create a bootable recovery archive is used in conjunction with regular backups to protect all of your data. Please see Chapter 7 for backup-related information.
