Preface

There were too many people involved in helping me with this book to list each and every one. I have, therefore, decided to formally thank those who wrote sections of the book and those who took time to review it. I'm still not sure whether it takes more time to write something or review something that has been written to ensure that it is correct.

Duane Zitzner

Duane Zitzner is President Computing Systems and Vice President Hewlett-Packard Company. Duane acted as the executive champion and sponsor of this book. His support was invaluable in helping get the resources necessary to complete this book.

The Author-Marty Poniatowski

Marty has been a System Engineer with Hewlett-Packard Company for fifteen years in the New York area. He has worked with hundreds of Hewlett Packard customers in many industries, including Internet startups, financial services, and manufacturing. Marty has been widely published in computer industry trade publications. He has published over 50 articles on various computer-related topics. In addition to this book, he is the author of nine other Prentice Hall books: Marty holds an M.S. in Information Systems from Polytechnic University (Brooklyn, NY), an M.S. in Management Engineering from the University of Bridgeport (Bridgeport, CT), and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Roger Williams University (Bristol, RI).

Francis Huang - vPars Expert and Reviewer

My sincere thanks to Francis Huang of Hewlett-Packard Company in Cupertino, CA. Mr. Huang wrote the official HP manuals for vPars and generously devoted a great deal of time to reviewing the vPars sections of all chapters in this book.

Francis was formerly an HP-UX systems administrator and a MPE applications programmer. He is currently a technical writer at Hewlett-Packard in the San Francisco Bay area. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science, is a licensed esthetician for the State of California, and will soon begin his first paid assignment as a professional home-office organizer.

Geff Blaha - vPars Expert and Reviewer

Mr. Blaha has worked on a number of activities related to vPars software including: development of web-based training; field review of the product as part of the early access program when only select group of HP installations were using the product; and Ignite-UX-related work including the procedure for using Ignite-UX and vPars that appears in the book.

Geff reviewed the entire vPars-specific part of this book and contributed the vPars Ignite-UX procedure. Geff is a UNIX Support Knowledge engineer, developing training for the HP-UX operating system and kernel subsystems. Geff started his career at Hewlett-Packard more than 23 years ago in Los Angeles, working as a Customer Engineer and Senior Customer Engineer supporting Real-Time and HP-UX systems. His contributions to support include working in the San Francisco Bay area as a Response Center Engineer and WorldWide Technology Expert Center (WTEC) Engineer, providing solutions for RTE, HP-RT, and HP-UX customers. Geff holds a B.S. in Engineering Technology from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

Hayden Brown - vPars Expert

Hayden Brown is a vPars expert who was my primary contact in all of the work I performed with vPars before the release of the product. He helped me through many of the initial hurdles I had to overcome when working with a new product and his help was invaluable.

Hayden brought his UNIX expertise to Hewlett-Packard over eleven years ago. He has worked in a variety of rolls from account support engineer, technical consultant and customer education instructor teaching courses on networking, HP-UX administration and HP-UX internals. For the past four years he has been a member of the E-Commerce Data Center Lab's Advance Technology Center. He was chartered with developing and training both HP technical consultants and customers on Systems Consolidation strategy. Part of the strategy is the HP Partitioning Continuum which includes technologies such as Process Resource Manager, Workload Manager, Processor Sets, and Virtual Partitions. Hayden has presented papers on these technologies at HPWorld and InterWorks over the last several years. In a supporting roll for the vPar Lab, Hayden wrote the first techni-cal white paper on vPars, and managed the Early Access Program for HP customers on vPars. Through his interactions with customers and HP technologists he is helping to shape the future of partitioning technologies within Hewlett-Packard.
