Goals of the Transition Phase

RUP identifies several objectives for the Transition phase, as outlined in Appendix A. As we have said about other aspects of RUP, the goals aren't all appropriate for every project. For our project, we worked with the following goals:

  • Beta testing to validate the system against user expectations

  • Training users

  • Tuning code and fixing bugs

We had other minor goals. We expected to do a final code refactoring, document the system for others who would work on it after us, and do a project post-mortem to improve our process on future projects. Commercial software development projects have more goals for the Transition phase, including training the internal support staff, preparing marketing and rollout materials, and manufacturing.
