The Missing Manual series is a joint venture between Pogue Press (the dream team introduced on these pages) and O'Reilly Media (a dream publishing partner). I'm indebted, as always, to Tim O'Reilly, Mark Brokering, Betsy Waliszewski, and the rest of the gang.

I was particularly fortunate to hook up with several members of Apple's iLife team, who proved to be gifted communicators , software visionaries, and really great guys. Product managers Fred Johnson and Xander Soren provided an articulate and enthusiastic entree to GarageBand ”and they introduced me to Gary Drenan. Gary may have authored GarageBand's online help, but the help he gave me online ”by serving as technical reviewer for this book ”was absolutely incredible. Apple is lucky to have him, but I was luckier.

Thanks are due, too, to agent David Rogelberg; proofreaders John Cacciatore and Teresa Noelle Roberts; copy editors of the first edition Nan Barber and John Cacciatore; Steve Alper, who created the sheet-music examples in Appendix A; Anas Canon; Dave McFarland, who wrote the tutorial song in Chapter 3 (on his first attempt at GarageBand, no less!); and, above all, to Jennifer, Kelly, Tia, and Jeffrey, who make these books ”and everything else ”possible.

David Pogue
